The principle of TOC analyzer is that organic carbon in solution is oxidized to carbon dioxide

The principle of TOC analyzer is that organic carbon in solution is oxidized to carbon dioxide. After eliminating interfering substances, the carbon dioxide content is measured by a detector. The quantitative determination of total organic carbon in solution is based on the carbon content relationship between carbon dioxide and total organic carbon.

There are three main types of measurement methods for total organic carbon analyzers: wet oxidation-non-dispersive infrared detection and UV-wet oxidation-non-dispersive infrared detection. The UV-wet oxidation method combines the effects of UV oxidation and wet oxidation. It addresses the limitation of UV oxidation, which cannot be used for complex water bodies with high TOC content. This combined approach can measure heavily polluted water bodies. This method treats the sample with phosphoric acid before oxidation with acidic potassium persulfate. After removing inorganic carbon, the TOC concentration is determined.
